How to calculate the molecular weight of sodium hyaluronate from Intrinsic Viscosity?

The molecular weight of sodium hyaluronate can calculate via the Mark Houwink equation. From the Mark-Houwink equation the relationship among the molecular weight and viscosity are given below:

       [Ƞ] = KMα

Where Ƞ is the intrinsic viscosity , M is Molecular weight, K and α are constants for a particular polymer solvent  system.

The unit of intrinsic viscosity can be m3/kg or dl/g. (1m3/kg=10dl/g)

when unit of Ƞ is dl/g

K= 0.00057

α= 0.75

Unit of M is Da (dalton)

In excel, The molecular weight of sodium hyaluronate can be calculated as below: M=POWER((Ƞ/0.00057),1/0.75)

 

For example, Ƞ=2.801m3/kg=28.01dl/g, M=POWER((28.01/0.00057),1/0.75)=1.8M Da
