What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid, also called hyaluronan, is a polymer of disaccharides, which are composed of D-glucuronic acid and D-N-acetylglucosamine, linked via alternating beta-1,4 and beta-1,3 glycosidic bonds.
Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid, commercial hyaluronic acid is commonly its sodium salt form.
